Judge, Court 3: Hill

October 24, 2006

The race for judge in Circuit Court 3 is between Democrat Valeri Haughton and Republican Frances "Francie" Hill.

This is a very close race, with two strong candidates. We give Hill the edge.

Hill has less courtroom experience, but is very long on administrative skill and served as juvenile court referee for six years in Monroe County. Temperament is very important in this courtroom, which will handle small claims, protective orders and domestic relations. She clearly is smart, thoughtful, compassionate and describes herself as task- oriented and someone who likes to solve problems.

Her background includes teaching in the Indiana University School of Law and work as a consultant to the Indiana Supreme Court. She understands the law and legal issues.

Haughton's legal career is shorter, but has included significant time trying cases. She has a wealth of life experience to draw from, including 20 years as a mental health counselor. She says it's really important to listen to people and then move the docket along. We believe she too has the right temperament for this courtroom, although she might have a little harder edge than Hill - which could be good or bad.

Three good judge candidates

Herald Times - Oct. 30, 2006

To the editor:

This year, Monroe County will elect three judges. Unopposed for re-election is Judge Marc Kellams, Seat 2. Judge Jeffrey A. Chalfant is running to remain as Judge of Seat 8. Francie Hill seeks election to Monroe County Seat 3, following the retirement of Judge Randy Bridges.

Judge Chalfant has served us well on the bench. His even temperament and compassionate approach mesh well with his wide base of experience. Judge Chalfant has served Monroe County as deputy prosecutor and as public defender. In addition, he has extensive experience as a private lawyer.

Francie Hill would be an excellent addition to our board of judges. She serves as a consultant to the Indiana Supreme Court, developing family courts. She has also served as a law professor at Indiana University School of Law, and she presided as Juvenile Court Referee, hearing all juvenile cases in Monroe County.

Each of these three is experienced in the law, compassionate, fair and dedicated to Monroe County. I urge you to join me in voting for Judge Kellams, Judge Chalfant and judge candidate Hill.

Hill supported for judge

Herald Times - Oct. 30, 2006

To the editor:

I have known Francie Hill for over 20 years. Her experience on the bench helped me as principal of Edgewood Junior High School. I have only the highest regard for her fairness to all parties. Francie was always firm in applying the principle of law.

Francie has spent a great deal of time helping train and update judges and assisting judges all over Indiana.

We need Francie as a judge in our county! I urge all my friends, associates, former students, and parents to cast your vote for Francie Hill this November. She is the best qualified person for that seat.

Let us also return Judge Jeff Chalfant to his seat. He is a proven, capable, and professional judge.
